Sharp’s thin film products pair amorphous silicon with a layer of Sharp’s proprietary microcrystalline silicon to achieve high stability and low degradation. This tandem junction architecture captures more of the solar spectrum and converts more sunlight into electricity. Thin film is produced with less than one percent of the silicon used in crystalline solar cells which translates to a less material-intensive manufacturing process and a lower cost. Additionally, the temperature coefficient for power output – approximately half that of crystalline silicon – allows thin film to generate up to 10 percent more power when ambient temperature is high as compared to its crystalline silicon counterpart.
In manufacturing thin film, Sharp uses silicon, which is abundant and poses no threat to people or the planet.
