My PG-M20S, PG-M20X, PG-M20XA, PG-M20XU, or PG-M25X projector shuts down sometimes while I am using it. What should I do?
Sharp has determined that the PG-M20/M25 series data projectors may exhibit an intermittent condition that may cause the unit to shut down during use. This condition has been confirmed to exist in a limited quantity of the M20 / M25 series products. This condition may or may not affect all units. To prevent any user inconvenience, it is Sharp's commitment to verify and/or service all units at the user's discretion.

Why is the projector displaying no image and the words "NO REG" on the screen?

The "NO REG" indication refers to a signal that is being received but not understood by the projector. The most common cause of this message is a resolution incompatibility. It is important to understand that each projector has a "native" resolution. (See owner's manual to determine this.) In order to insure that the projector is compatible with the computer, the resolution on the computer will need to be set to that of the projector. For example, if the projector's native resolution is 800 x 600 (SVGA), the desktop resolution of the computer must be the same.

The easiest method for making this adjustment (when using a Windows operating system) is to "Right-Click" on the desktop and choose "Properties". Then choose the "Settings" tab and adjust the slide bar listed under the "Desktop Area" portion of the dialog box. If this adjustment does not solve the problem, we recommend contacting us at 888-467-4277, Option 2, for further assistance.

Why does the image have a pink tint or a green tint?

The cause of this problem is most often a setting that can be changed with the menu. Though it is difficult to be specific due to the variety of models, we can advise that the menu item relates to choosing a signal that is either "Component" or "RGB". When these settings are chosen incorrectly, the color tint is a common result.

Another cause of this problem can be a defective cable. Check the pins of each end of the computer signal cable to be sure that they are not bent or altered in any way. One pin can be the cause of many problems!

Why doesn't my remote mouse work?

One of the most convenient features of the Sharp LCD projectors is the remote control mouse that enables the user to operate a computer from a distance during a presentation. If the mouse control is not working correctly, use the following guidelines to troubleshoot.

a. Is the slide switch on the remote control adjusted to the "Mouse" setting?
b. Is the mouse receiver connected properly to the computer? Depending on the model, the receiver can be connected to the PS/2, Serial, or USB ports on your computer. It may be necessary to contact your PC manufacturer for advice on these connections.
c. Is the remote being aimed at the receiver and not the projector?
d. It may sound obvious - but - are the batteries OK? (One way to confirm this on some models is to verify that the laser pointer continues to work.)

Mouse settings on a computer are tricky business. Please check with your computer.

Do you have any advice for making my lamp last longer?

Following the guidelines below can make a significant difference in the life of your lamp. Proper care and maintenance, of course, are the first steps toward getting the most use out of your lamp AND your projector.

a. Are you shutting the unit down properly? Many of the models have a two-stage shut down process. Be sure to shut the unit off with the power control on the top of the projector or on the remote control. The fan will continue to run, thus cooling the lamp properly. When the fan stops on its own, it is then safe to power down the unit with the main power switch - usually at the rear of the projector.
b. How much ventilation is available to the projector? Heat is an enemy of all projector lamps. Be sure to install or use the projector in areas that have plenty of clean ventilation.
c. Are the filters clean? The environment can be a major cause of premature lamp failures. Check your filters often for anything that could be blocking complete air flow. This is especially necessary when the units are installed in smoky or dusty rooms.

What is the difference between ANSI Lumens, lumens, and lux?

An Ansi lumen is a standard measure of the brightness and uniformity of a projected image. The ANSI lumen does not assume that the projector's light source is uniform, so to measure uniformity as well as brightness, it divides the projected image area into nine equal areas, measures the brightness at the center point of each area, and averages the measurements using a standard ANSI test pattern.

A lumen is a measure of the brightness of a uniform light source of one candle. A lux is a measure of the illumination of an area lit by a uniform light source, and is equal to one lumen per square meter.
In the projector industry, the ANSI lumen is the standard unit of measure for brightness and uniformity. The lumen and the lux are standards in other fields such as optometry and photography.

When I use the wireless remote mouse with PowerPoint, I can advance the slides with the left mouse button, but I can't show the slides in reverse order with the right mouse button. What should I do to correct this?

There is a setting in PowerPoint that can prevent the right mouse button from showing slides in reverse order. To correct this PowerPoint setting, use the following procedure.

a. In PowerPoint, select "Tools", then "Options", then "View".
b. Under the "Slide-show" heading, look for "Pop-up menu on right mouse click". Make sure there is no check mark in that box. If it is checked, de-select the check mark to make it disappear.

Can my Sharp projector display S-Video and composite video when both are connected to the same video input?
Some older model projectors when both composite video and S-Video cables are connected to the same video input, S-Video always takes precedence. If your projector has two video inputs, you can connect the S-Video source to the video 1 input and the composite video source to the video 2 input. Use the input select button to switch between sources.

What type of screen should I use?

Sharp offers a wide range of manual and motorized wall-mount projection screens, in diagonal screen sizes from 72" to 120". If the projector will be operated in an environment where the ambient light cannot be controlled, you might want to consider one of Sharp's glass-beaded screens, which amplify the projector's light by a factor of 2.5. For environments where the ambient light is controllable, you might want to consider Sharp's Matte White screens. Matte White screens provide the best overall image quality with the widest viewing angle, but they don't amplify the projector's light output.

For more-specialized screen applications, such as rear projection, we recommend you consult with your dealer, or contact one of the following vendors of high-quality screens:

Draper Shade and Screen Company

If a carrying / shipping case is "ATA approved," does that mean it will fit under the seat or in the overhead compartment of an airline?
No. "ATA approved" simply means that the shipping case will maintain its integrity for at least 100 flights. Typically, an ATA-type shipping case will not fit under the seat or in the overhead compartment due to the case's heavy-duty construction. Sharp does offer light-duty carrying cases, as well as padded carry bags, that are designed to meet many of the airline carry-on regulations. Please contact your specific airline carrier to verify their current regulations and restrictions for carry-on baggage.

What is the DC jack on the back of the projector, and where can I get a plug for it?
The DC jack allows you to connect the projector to a relay to activate a projection screen automatically when the projector is turned on. If the jack is labeled "12V," the concentric plug that mates with this jack is the SwitchCraft, Inc. (773-792-2700) model #760, which is available from dozens of distributors throughout the United States and Canada. If the jack is labeled "5V," the concentric plug that mates with this jack is marketed only in Japan. If you need such a 5V plug, please contact Sharp LCD Technical Support at 1-888-467-4277, Option 2.

What is line doubling?
Line doubling is the process of combining two fields of video lines and displaying them in the same amount of time it normally takes to display one field. In normal, interlaced NTSC video, one field (about 240 visible lines) is displayed every 1/60 of a second. In line-doubled video, two fields (about 480 visible lines -- also called a frame) are combined and displayed every 1/60 of a second. This same frame is then repeated (displayed again) for another 1/60 of a second while the next two incoming fields (from the video signal source) are combined. To perform line doubling, Sharp LCD panels and projectors double their horizontal video scan rate from 15.75kHz to 31.5kHz. Line doubling results in increased temporal resolution, eliminating the flicker and motion artifacts associated with normal, interlaced video. With the increased picture quality, there is no need for a costly external line doubler.

Can my Sharp projector display S-video and composite video when both are connected to the same video input?
At this point the PG-M10S, PG-M10X, and the PG-C20XU has this feature. As for the other models, when both composite video and S-video cables are connected to the same video input, S-video always takes precedence. If your projector has two video inputs, you can connect the S-video source to the video-1 input and the composite-video source to the video-2 input. Use the input-select button (either on the remote control or on the projector itself) to switch between sources.

Why do I get an overscanned image or no image at all on my projector when using my computer? How can I correct this?
An overscanned image can result from setting the computer's resolution too high. It's also possible that the video-driver configuration you are using in your computer may not conform to VESA standards. To properly display an image on your Sharp panel or projector, you must match the resolution of the computer's RGB signal to the resolution required by the Sharp panel or projector, and you must configure the computer's video driver to output a VESA-standard signal.
BACK TO TOP back to top
If I properly configure the video driver in my laptop computer and I still experience an image problem, is there anything else I can attempt before calling for technical support?
Disable the laptop's display by changing the laptop's display mode to external-only mode. The display mode is controlled by one of the "function" keys located on the top row of the keyboard. Please refer to your laptop owner's manual to identify the correct function key to perform this operation.

Are older Sharp projectors compatible with computer workstations such as SGI, Sun, and HP?

When considering using a workstation with a Sharp projector, the two main compatibility issues you must consider are the cable that carries the RGB signal from the workstation to the projector, and the RGB signal itself.

Many workstations output their RGB signal through a 13W3 connector. To connect such a workstation to a Sharp projector, you would need an adaptor cable with a 13W3 connector on one end (to mate with the workstation) and a 15-pin or 5-BNC connector on the other end (to mate with the projector). These adaptors are available from Extron Electronics (800-633-9876).

As for the workstation's RGB video signal, there are three issues involved: resolution, vertical-refresh rate, and synchronization.

Obviously, the workstation must be able to operate at a resolution and vertical-refresh rate that the projector can accept. These parameters are listed in the projector's operation manual under the heading "Input Signals."

Regarding synchronization, there are three ways of transmitting the sync signal from the workstation to the projector: separate vertical and horizontal sync, composite sync, and sync on green. Many workstations put out composite sync, and some put out sync on green. Sharp's newer projectors can accept composite sync. Sharp projector models XG-NV3XB and XG-E3500U can accept sync on green. Older Sharp projectors require separate horizontal and vertical synchronization signals. These projectors can be used with composite-sync or sync-on-green workstations by using an interface device called a sync separator, available from Extron Electronics (800-633-9876).
